On August 28, two NL West teams provided updates on notable injured players. Neither update was particularly good. Xander Bogaerts is dealing with a non-displaced fracture after a errant foul ball in Seattle. As for Randy Rodriguez, the Giants may not have him for next season.
The Padres placed shortstop Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day IL with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot.
It occurred when Bogaerts fouled a ball off his foot in Seattle this past Wednesday. Padres manager Mike Shildt stated that their medical team doesn’t believe it’s a season-ending injury.
Giants reliever Randy Rodriguez (elbow) was recommended for Tommy John surgery, per the team. As of now, he’s not yet made up his mind on whether to undergo it.
If he does, it would knock him out for the entire 2026 season.
The 25-year-old was a good strikeout pitcher in 2024, his rookie season. Rodriguez took a step forward in 2025, as he posted a 1.78 ERA before he was placed on the IL.
The Diamondbacks placed 1B/OF Pavin Smith on the 10-day IL with a left quad strain.
Rangers reliever Chris Martin threw a scoreless inning for Frisco (AA) on August 29.

Pittsburgh placed Jack Suwinski on the 10-day IL with a right groin strain.

That latter move officially ends Carter’s 2025 season.
The Nationals placed catcher Drew Millas on the 10-day IL with a left finger fracture. It’s retroactive to August 28.
St. Louis placed Alec Burleson on the 10-day IL with right wrist inflammation, while Yohel Pozo (concussion) went on the 7-day IL.
