Several teams received bad news on the injury front on July 28. The Nationals lost arguably their pitching prospect for a significant period of time, while Kris Bubic’s great season ended on a sour note. Additionally, the Tigers lost their second notable starting pitcher to a season-ending injury.
It was bad news all around on July 28 for most of the AL Central teams. Kansas City was not spared, as Kris Bubic had been officially ruled out for the rest of the 2025 campaign.
Bubic, placed on the IL with a left rotator cuff strain, will be shut down until at least October per the team. The good news is he’s not believed to need surgery.
The Tigers swung a trade for Twins right-hander Chris Paddack on July 28. And hours later, Detroit announced that one of their five regular starting pitchers is done for the rest of the 2025 regular season: Reese Olson.
Olson was dealing with shoulder discomfort, and while the team stated their evaluation of him is not done yet, an MRI revealed the strain. He was placed on the 60-day IL, effectively ending his regular season.
The Nationals announced pitching prospect Travis Sykora will need Tommy John surgery, ending his 2025 and, likely, 2026 seasons.
Sykora only made 12 starts this season, split between the FCL, Low-A, High-A, and Double-A. He started 2025 rehabbing from offseason hip surgery.
The right-hander is arguably the team’s prospect.
Astros infielder Jeremy Pena has been assigned to Triple-A Sugar Land to rehab from a rib injury.
Max Muncy will begin a rehab assignment with Oklahoma City (AAA) this week.
The Tigers placed outfielder Parker Meadows on the 10-day IL with a right quad strain.
Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis was shifted to the 60-day IL.
Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez will get X-rays after he was hit by a pitch on July 28.
