The Yankees have held on to a playoff spot without Gerrit Cole thus far this season. But while Cole is not an option for the rest of 2025, the right-hander did make his first big step forward on August 11. Additionally, the Royals will look to get their ace back soon, as he’s set to throw a bullpen session this week.
Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole made 20 tosses from flat ground on August 11, the first of many steps on his road back. It’s the first time he’s done that since undergoing Tommy John surgery this past spring.
Cole stated that he was building up for weeks and will try to throw from a mound by the end of the year. His goal is to have a 14-month recovery, which would put him on track for a May 2026 return.
Cole Ragans is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on August 12 as he looks to return before the end of the 2025 season. Ragans, on the 60-day IL, has not pitched since early June.
As for other injury-related news for the Royals, Jac Caglianone will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha this week.
Additionally, the Royals placed reliever Hunter Harvey on the IL with a right adductor strain.
Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez took batting practice down in Florida on August 11, as he recovers from a hand injury that’s kept him out since the first third of the year.
Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan (groin) did not start on August 11, the third straight game.
Bobby Witt Jr. (back) returned to the Royals’ lineup after a one-game absence.
Brady Basso (Athletics), Byron Buxton (Twins), and Brandon Waddell (Mets) were activated off the injured list.
