Kansas City was within three games of the Mariners for the final AL Wild Card spot heading into play on September 4. However, the Royals will be without Seth Lugo until at least the middle of the final month. It’s one of several injury-related notes from the 4th of September.
Royals pitcher Seth Lugo was placed on the injured list with a low back strain, retroactive to September 1.
Lugo was originally pushed back this week, as he was supposed to start on September 4. Kansas City, though, pushed back his start and instead went with Noah Cameron.
Manager Matt Quatraro stated he hopes to be on the IL for the minimum.
Dodgers catcher Will Smith left the team’s game on September 3 after a foul ball nicked his right hand. It was listed as a right-hand contusion.
The team provided an update on September 4. X-rays came back negative, although he will get a CT scan for further examination. Nonetheless, Dave Roberts stated that Smith is not expected to play in the Dodgers’ series against the Orioles.
Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani will start on September 8 for the Dodgers on the mound. His previously scheduled start against the Pirates was cancelled due to illness.
The Rangers placed reliever Danny Coulombe on the 15-day IL with left shoulder fatigue, retroactive to September 1.
Coulombe gave up three home runs over 8.1 IP with Texas this season after not allowing one across 31 innings for the Twins.
Tigers reliever Paul Sewald threw a scoreless inning for West Michigan (A+) on September 4.
Mets reliever Reed Garrett struck out two over one scoreless inning for Binghamton (AA).
