While the 2026 World Baseball Classic is still months away, one notable player won’t be available come March: Enrique Hernandez. Hernandez recently underwent surgery weeks after the 2025 World Series to repair an elbow injury. That’s one of several injury-related notes from the first full week of the 2025-26 MLB offseason.

Hernandez underwent elbow surgery

Two members of the Dodgers’ 2025 World Series championship team recently required surgery. One of those players is now-free agent Enrique Hernandez.

Hernandez posted on Instagram in Spanish that he recently underwent elbow surgery to repair an extensor muscle, an injury that had been bothering him since May. His recovery will prevent him from playing in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

The 31-year-old had two stints on the IL with what was reported as elbow inflammation. His .621 OPS this season across 93 games was the worst of his Major League career.

Edman also needed surgery

Speaking of injured utilitymen, the Dodgers confirmed this past week that Tommy Edman will need offseason ankle surgery. Edman’s ankle was bothering him for most of the year, and the hope is that he’ll be ready for Spring Training 2026.

It was a strange overall season for Edman, who posted a +10 Outs Above Average and hit a career-high for home runs (13) despite only playing in 97 games. The 30-year-old had multiple ankle-related IL stints this season.

On top of that, his .656 OPS this past season was a career-worst for Edman.

McNeil underwent thoracic outlet surgery

The New York Post reported this past week that Jeff McNeil underwent a thoracic outlet syndrome procedure. McNeil’s agent confirmed the news.

McNeil hit 12 home runs across 462 plate appearances this season. However, the 33-year-old only slashed .234/.329/.358 (.687 OPS) in the second half.
