The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached an agreement on a contract with third-round draft pick Brian Curley. MLB.com’s Jim Callis reported Sunday that the team has signed the former Georgia pitcher for $700,000, slightly less than the pick value of $839,100.

The VCU transfer appeared in 17 games for the Bulldogs this past season. He posted an ERA of 3.55, a record of 4-2 with 85 strikeouts in 66 innings.

Curley was part of a Bulldogs team that earned the right to host a Regional in the NCAA Tournament. However, Georgia ended up bowing out after back-to-back losses against Duke and Oklahoma State.

Prior to his arrival in Athens, Curley was named first team All-Atlantic 10 during the 2024 season at VCU. He posted an ERA of 2.87 with 78 strikeouts and 35 walks across 78.1 innings pitched.

Brian Curley was drafted in the 16th round of the 2024 MLB Draft to the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, he opted to return for another year of college baseball and transferring to an SEC program certainly helped him to improve his draft stock.

“Curley not only deals at 94-97 mph and reaches 100 with his fastball, but he also produces high spin rates and difficult carry, and has maintained his velocity through longer outings,” MLB.com wrote in a recent scout of the pitcher. “He also has shown the ability to miss bats with three different breaking balls, the best of which is a mid-80s slider with impressive depth. It elicits more chases than an upper-80s cutter and a low-80s curveball that serves as a change of pace against lefties.

“Though he’ll get a chance to prove himself as a starter in pro ball, Curley projects more as a power reliever at the next level. He lacks size and pitches with considerable effort which results in fringy control. His fastball does lack life, so he needs to work in the mid-90s and up in the zone to keep it off barrels.”

That certainly some positive feedback on the right-hander’s game and he’ll look to get to work proving that the Diamondbacks made the right selection. For both Georgia and VCU fans alike, his journey through the major leagues will definitely be one to follow as he looks to carry over his impressive play from college.
