Cleveland Guardians rookie outfielder Nolan Schubart has officially signed his contract with the team, according to Jim Callis of MLB.com. The third-round pick will reportedly make $730,000, which is a little less than the projected value of $759,400 for the 101st overall pick.
Schubart played three seasons of college baseball at Oklahoma State, committing to the Cowboys out of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake Village, Michigan. He was a three-year starter in Stillwater, starting 161 of 164 total appearances.
This past season, Schubart led OSU with 19 home runs and 57 RBIs while batting .300. He was named honorable mention All-Big 12 just one season after he was named a third team All-American according to D1 Baseball.
Schubart ends his career in Stillwater with 59 home runs, which ranks fourth in program history. He also ranks ninth all time at OSU with a .705 slugging percentage and 10th with 199 RBIs along with a .334 batting average.
Perhaps Shubart’s best season came in 2024 as a sophomore. He was just two hits shy of the Big 12 triple crown with a batting average of .370, 23 home runs and 68 RBI in 49 games.
MLB.com provided some additional analysis on Nolan Schubart’s game in a predraft scouting report. It noted his hitting power but also noted concerns about his ability to contribute in other way, projecting him to either move to first base or designated hitter in the pros.
“While Schubart is pretty much a one-tool guy, prodigious left-handed power is always in demand, and he owns plus-plus raw pop thanks to his combination of bat speed, massive strength and a stroke designed to launch balls in the air,” the report read. “He can drive the ball out of any part of any ballpark and will take walks when pitchers refuse to challenge him. He comes with concerns about how he’ll handle pro pitching, however, because he strikes out at a high rate and struggles even with in-zone contact.
“Schubart has to hit because he offers little value outside of the batter’s box. He’s a well-below-average runner with range to match on the outfield corners and a below-average arm. He’ll almost certainly shift to first base at the next level and could wind up at DH.”
Regardless, Shubart will look to get to work in the minor leagues and work his way up to the majors. Now that his contract is settled, he can focus on the field and will have Cowboys fans rooting for him.
