The Baltimore Orioles have to feel like they got one of the best prospects late in the first round. High school outfielder Slater de Brun fell to the O’s, and now, he is getting a nice payday. de Brun will make well over slot value of the 37th overall pick.
“Supplemental 1st-rder Slater de Brun signs w/ @Orioles for $4 million (slot 37 value = $2,631,400),” Jim Callis said via X. “Best prep OF in @MLBDraft, advanced hitter, well above-average speed plays well on bases and in center field. Vanderbilt recruit.”
A high number may have been required for de Brun, considering where he was committed to play college baseball. Vanderbilt is one of the best programs out there, continually producing stars. Had de Brun gone to Nashville, there is still a good chance he would have been selected early in a few years.
Instead, the Orioles lock him down and get him inside the organization. A big win for them as the young talent continues to flow through the pipeline. General manager Mike Elias catches a good amount of heat in Baltimore but seemingly did a great job with this selection and negotiation. Now, the hope is de Brun plays to his potential and one day makes his debut at Camden Yards.
A scouting report was produced on de Brun just ahead of the draft. On an 80-grade scale, the outfielder was listed at a 50-grade. His 65 run ability was his best overall trait, good news for defensive positioning. However, there is a lot of excitement regarding the 55-grade hitting. Not necessarily power but what de Brun could become as a contact hitter.
“First jumping on the radar as an underclassman at the WWBA in Jupiter in 2023, de Brun’s profile took a step forward with his performances on the summer showcase circuit,” the scouting report said. “He has very impressive bat-to-ball skills with an advanced eye at the plate, understanding that his job is to put the ball in play and get on base, then using his well-above-average speed on the basepaths.
“Power may never be a huge part of his game, but while some evaluators worried about impact, de Brun showed up this spring with added strength and more ability to drive the ball from the left side of the plate, displaying more physicality than Carroll at this stage.
