Two former Blue Jays found homes on September 26. The Nationals added former top prospect Orelvis Martinez in the free agent pool. Atlanta, meanwhile, claimed former All-Star Alek Manoah off waivers, marking yet another notable in-season pickup by the Braves.
The Braves officially claimed Alek Manoah on the 26th, three days after the Blue Jays designated him for assignment.
Manoah, as noted when the Jays made the move to DFA him, still had not yet regained his pre-Tommy John velocity. However, he was missing bats, with a 28.4% Whiff% down with Buffalo (AAA).
The 27-year-old could become a notable part of the Braves’ 2026 plans if Atlanta plans to hold on to him. The Braves will likely be without AJ Smith-Shawver for next season, thanks to elbow surgery recovery.
Manoah was optioned to the FCL after the move.
Another former Blue Jay, Orelvis Martinez, was signed by the Nationals on a Minor League deal, per the Washington Post. Toronto DFA’d Martinez earlier this month.
Noted earlier this month, Martinez was at one point a high-end power-hitting prospect who made his MLB debut last season. However, a PED suspension, coupled with a sharp dip in production, led to his ultimate release.
When Martinez made contact, he could do damage. The 23-year-old, who will turn 24 in November, posted a 5.1 Barrel/PA down in Triple-A Buffalo. The problem, though, is a major swing-and-miss problem that’s been prevalent in his entire pro career.
This season with Buffalo, his Whiff% was a very high 35.2%.
Cubs first baseman Carlos Santana, acquired before the postseason roster deadline in August, was optioned to the ACL to open up a spot for the returning Kyle Tucker.
The Diamondbacks designated Nabil Crismatt for assignment.
