2025 Transactions: Athletics Agree to Extend Tyler Soderstrom

Believe it or not, we did have a reported contract signing on Christmas Day. The Athletics have reportedly extended 1B/OF Tyler Soderstrom, giving the 24-year-old and breakout star from this past season a seven-year extension that’ll rank as the largest given out in franchise history.

Athletics extend Soderstrom

Per ESPN, the Athletics extended Tyler Soderstrom as part of a seven-year, $86MM deal that will also include a club option for a potential eighth season. His new contract will also include escalators that can increase the contract value up to $ 131 million.

It is the largest contract handed out by the Athletics in its entire team history.

Since Soderstrom has over two years of MLB experience, the contract will buyout his final pre-arbitration season, his three years of arbitration eligibility, plus at least three seasons beyond that. It also ensures that the Athletics will have him under contract through the end of his 20s.

Soderstrom found his groove in 2025, a season that saw him start the year as a first baseman and end it as an outfielder thanks to Nick Kurtz. He exploded in the early part of the year, as Soderstrom hit nine home runs before the end of April.

He cooled but went on to have a strong half, as the 24-year-old slashed .300/.358/.495 with seven home runs and 27 extra-base hits. Soderstrom finished as one of several to be tied for 26th in extra-base hits across the second half.

The former first-round pick has long shown power and bat speed. Soderstrom has been able to catch up to fastballs throughout his short MLB career. But this past season, he cut the Whiff% down from 30.1% in 2024 to 25.4% in 2025.

Additionally, Soderstrom made significantly more contact against changeups. His Whiff% on the pitch went from 33% to 22% between 2024 and 2025.

One note on the two yellow dots at the 100% line: Soderstrom has seen just 12 recorded slurves in his MLB career. He whiffed on all three he swung at. (via New Baseball Media)

It’s also worth noting that this is the third notable extension that the Athletics have handed out in 2025. The A’s extended Brent Rooker in January and bought out all of Lawrence Butler‘s arbitration-eligible years, plus more, via the extension he received in March.

What else?

The Reds signed 17-year-old pitching prospect David Mendoza to a Minor League deal on December 24.
