When Pete Alonso left in free agency this past year, the Mets planned to replace his presence with Mark Vientos and newcomer Jorge Polanco. Now, both Vientos & Polanco are among the players injured for the long-term for the Mets. And in Polanco’s case, his season is officially over.
The Mets placed 1B/DH Jorge Polanco on the 10-day IL with left ankle bursitis. Polanco will undergo season-ending surgery on his ankle, per manager Andy Green.
It will end what was a disappointing season for the oft-injured infielder. Polanco batted .148 this season and went 7-for-58 over his final weeks active this season. He accrued just 135 total at-bats this season thanks to injury.
Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena departed against the Angels due to a hand contusion.
Pena was hit on the hand after Walbert Urena jammed him inside with a 100 MPH sinker. The Astros infielder was hit on the check swing that occurred on the pitch.
Also of note from Queens, Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts was removed from the club’s game on August 19.
Bogaerts was pulled with a hamstring injury after he was seen grabbing it after a swing in the seventh inning.
The Guardians placed 1B Rhys Hoskins on the 10-day IL with lower back inflammation.
Rays outfielder Victor Mesa Jr. was placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain.
Brice Matthews (Astros, knee), Luke Raley (Mariners, forearm), Harrison Bader (Giants, foot), Phil Maton (Cubs, knee), and Daniel Susac (Giants, knee) were transferred to the 60-day IL.
The Red Sox had two rehabbing infielders with Triple-A Worcester. Isiah Kiner-Falefa went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, while Trevor Story went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Cubs infielder Matt Shaw went 1-for-3 for Triple-A Iowa. Shaw started at second base.
Royals 1B/OF Jac Caglianone left on August 19 with ankle soreness.
Jo Adell (knee contusion), Jacob Wilson (shoulder), and Chase DeLauter (hamstring) were out of their teams’ respective lineups.
Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement, meanwhile, was out with an illness.
