2026 Injury Report: Updates on Buxton, Chapman, Skubal

Multiple notables left games due to injury on June 5, including Byron Buxton, who exited after he collided with the outfield wall in Minnesota. Plus, the Red Sox’s top reliever has been dealing with a hamstring injury of late.

Chapman dealing with hamstring injury

Aroldis Chapman pitched on June 5 and picked up a save against the New York Yankees. However, it wasn’t an easy save in what hasn’t been an easy week for Chapman.

Interim manager Chad Tracy noted that Chapman dealt with a “minor hamstring issue” over the past week.

Injury departures

Byron Buxton left on June 5 after he collided shoulder-first into the Target Field center-field wall on a catch. Buxton was diagnosed with a shoulder contusion, per the team.

Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson departed Tampa Bay’s game against Miami with a bruised thumb, which manager Kevin Cash indicated that Simpson had been playing through for a few days.

Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho left against the Orioles with what manager John Schneider indicated is left wrist inflammation. He was seen shaking out his wrist during an at-bat in the first inning.

Orioles C/DH Samuel Basallo left with abdominal discomfort.

IL moves

Cardinals reliever Ryan Fernandez was placed on the 15-day IL with low back pain.

The Padres placed reliever Jeremiah Estrada on the IL with right knee inflammation.

Rockies pitcher Tanner Gordon was placed on the injured list with a right hip impingement.

Brewers pitcher DL Hall landed on the IL with a left pectoral strain.

Aaron Judge, as expected, has been placed on the IL.

Additionally, Garrett Crochet and Ramon Laureano were transferred to the 60-day IL.

Rehab assignments

Max Scherzer struck out five over 3.2 IP (73 pitches) for Triple-A Buffalo. He gave up five hits, one of which was a home run, and walked one. Scherzer maxed out at 96 MPH and averaged 93 MPH.

Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez went 0-4 with a strikeout for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Nationals pitcher DJ Herz started a combined seven-inning no-hitter for the team’s FCL affiliate. Herz struck out four after two scoreless innings.

Diamondbacks first baseman Carlos Santana went 2-3 with a home run in the ACL.

Other notes

Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal will pitch for High-A West Michigan on June 7.

JJ Wetherholt (lower body), Max Muncy (head), Ildemaro Vargas (thigh), and Maikel Garcia (hamstring) were not in their respective team’s starting lineups.
