Jose Caballero has played well in recent weeks, taking over as the primary shortstop with Anthony Volpe recovering and coming back from offseason surgery. And in the interim, it looks like Caballero will remain in that role. Volpe, for now, will continue to play in the Minors.
The Yankees announced on May 3 that shortstop Anthony Volpe was activated off the 10-day IL and subsequently optioned to Triple-A Scranton.
Volpe’s 20-day rehab assignment officially concluded on the 3rd, meaning that the Yankees had to decide whether to keep him in the Minors or bring him up and have the fourth-year player compete for playing time with Jose Caballero. The Yankees chose the former.
He slashed .250/.306/.318 in 13 games in the Minors between Triple-A and Double-A Somerset.
Per Marlins.TV, Marlins catcher Agustin Ramirez is expected to be demoted to Triple-A on May 4.
Ramirez was a hot-shot power-hitting catching prospect last season, one who hit 21 home runs and stole 16 bases in his rookie campaign. However, the 24-year-old’s swing-and-miss rate rose from 25.5% in 2025 to 31.5% in 2026, albeit in a smaller sample size. Still, Ramirez slashed .230/.318/.345 with two home runs over 129 plate appearances.
Zach Maxwell (Reds), Logan Henderson (Brewers), Tyler Ferguson (Athletics), and Blake Dunn (Reds) were recalled from the Minors.
Easton McGee (Brewers), Jace Jung (Tigers), Nick Raquet (Orioles), Rece Hinds (Reds), Luis Morales (Athletics), and Hunter Stratton (Braves) were optioned to the Minors.
Luis Peralta (Cubs), Zak Kent (Nationals), and Jose Suarez (Mariners) were claimed off waivers.
Vidal Brujan (Mets), Zack Short (Tigers), Jesus Valdez (D-Backs), Tayler Saucedo (Angels), and Jose Azocar (Braves) had their contracts selected.
Mariners outfielder Rhylan Thomas was designated for assignment. Yacksel Rios (Cubs), Grant Holman (Tigers), and Eric Wagaman (Mets) were also DFA’d.
Aramis Garcia (D-Backs), Joel Payamps (Braves), Carl Edwards Jr. (Mets), and Ben Cowles (Cubs) were sent outright to Triple-A.
