We are halfway through the 2026 regular season and for fans of major league baseball, there’s a lot to think about. Fans should enjoy it because it may be the last baseball they see for some time. This situation is partly due to fan-driven factors.

The collective bargaining agreement between league owners and the MLB Players Association expires in early December. Negotiations are expected to be contentious. Both sides have exchanged preliminary proposals, but remain far apart with little progress toward resolution. Consequently, this ongoing dispute could impact the future of major league baseball.

On Thursday afternoon, MLB’s official account on X announced a proposal to restructure the league to increase owner revenue. As expected, players have expressed dissatisfaction with this proposal, highlighting the complexities in baseball at the major league level.

The Athletics plan to open a new domed stadium on the Strip in 2028. However, ongoing labor disputes between MLB team owners and the players union could lead to a work stoppage in the 2027 season. This could potentially disrupt the momentum the A’s hope to build ahead of their move to Las Vegas. Clearly, these issues are not just about one team but could affect all of baseball’s major league clubs.

Major League Baseball is seeking to implement a salary cap to promote competitive balance. The league proposes limiting contract lengths to five years for free agents joining new teams and six years for players who remain with their current teams. Owners also want to eliminate deferred contracts. Additionally, MLB has proposed a $1 million minimum salary. Players want to maintain or grow their percentage of total revenue and avoid artificially limiting their value on the open market. In summary, the ongoing negotiations reflect the challenges inherent in major league baseball’s labor environment.
