Aaron Boone Provides Telling Update on DJ LeMahieu’s Return Plans

DJ LeMahieu is nearing his return to the New York Yankees, but how he fits back into the lineup remains a mystery.

Speaking with reporters on Sunday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone left the door open for LeMahieu to rejoin the team as soon as Monday in Seattle but stopped short of declaring that the veteran infielder has an everyday playing role upon his return.

Asked directly if LeMahieu is returning as an everyday player by YES NEtwork's Meredith Marakovitz, Boone didn’t commit.

“We’ll see. We’ll see,” Boone said. “I don’t necessarily see every day, but we’ll see how he’s doing and how he navigates it. But I definitely see him as a piece of the puzzle. We’ll continue to see how he’s doing physically, how he’s bouncing back, and we’ll kind of evaluate it as we move through.”

LeMahieu played his ninth minor league rehab game Sunday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as Boone, fittingly, watched his at-bats live during his media session. While LeMahieu appears close to physically ready, Boone wasn’t ready to announce a roster move before Sunday’s series finale against the A’s in Sacramento.

“Could be, could be,” Boone said when asked about the possibility of activating LeMahieu on Monday. “I’m watching him right now, so there’s a chance. We’ll get through this one today, see where he’s at, circle up, and that’s a possibility.”

As for where LeMahieu will see the most playing time, Boone pointed to second base, at least for now.

“Yeah, probably, yeah,” Boone said. “With Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] out, probably be some second base in there. And we’ll just kind of navigate it as we go.”

LeMahieu, who has been sidelined since spring training with a strained calf, has dealt with injuries over the past few years, diminishing his productivity. He is, however, a two-time batting champion who would give the Yankees a veteran right-handed bat to add to a left-handed-heavy lineup.
