Aaron Boone Unleashes Epic Ejection Meltdown Defending Yankees Rookie Star

Aaron Boone had had enough. The New York Yankees manager wasn’t about to stand quietly and watch Jasson Domínguez take a questionable called strike three in the ninth inning of a 1-1 game. Boone came flying out of the dugout Tuesday night in Seattle, mostly to protect Dominguez from getting tossed, but ended up nose-to-nose—almost literally—with home plate umpire Mark Wegner.

The bill of Boone’s cap nearly touched Wegner’s helmet as Boone unloaded, pointing and yelling in defense of the Yankees’ young star. The argument lasted long after Boone was officially ejected, marking his second ejection of the season and the 41st of his managerial career.

Boone continues to widen his lead as the Yankees’ all-time leader in managerial ejections, having passed Joe Girardi last season. He needed just over seven seasons to reach 41; Girardi managed 34 ejections over a full decade in the Bronx. No other Yankees skipper is even within ten of Boone’s total.

While Boone isn’t likely to catch Bobby Cox’s seemingly untouchable record of 162 career ejections, he’s charging toward the top 20 on the all-time MLB list. With just 14 more, he’ll join some of baseball’s most legendary—and fiery—bench bosses.

This latest ejection came less than two weeks after Boone got tossed defending Aaron Judge against the Rays. That incident also involved a borderline call and some heated conversations with multiple umpires.

Boone is known to go after umpires, especially younger ones, but his tirades always have a purpose. Tuesday night, Boone hustled out of the dugout to protect a young player. His ejection against the Rays was to highlight a missed call on a home run that was ruled a foul ball just before a called third strike. His most infamous ejection, the "Savages in the Box" rant in 2019,  was more about making sure Brett Gardner didn't get ejected than a bad call.
