If you're heading to Coors Field this weekend, bring a glove or a helmet. That's the takeaway from one fan's lawsuit from the Yankees' last trip to Denver.
With Aaron Judge and the Yankees in town, and the Rockies so inept they’re barely background noise, the risk of baseballs flying into places they shouldn’t is back in the spotlight. In fact, the last time the Yankees visited Denver’s high-altitude launching pad, one fan claimed it wasn’t just the scoreboard that took damage.
According to a lawsuit filed in Colorado, fan Timothy Roeckel was relaxing in a luxury suite during the Yankees-Rockies series in July 2023 when a foul ball allegedly struck him directly in the right eye, causing what the filing describes as "catastrophic and permanent injuries." Roeckel wasn’t expecting danger in a luxury suite, unless you count stale nachos or lukewarm beer.
But one foul ball apparently changed that in an instant.
The lawsuit paints a picture of Coors Field as less a ballpark and more of a cocktail lounge with occasional interruptions by flying baseballs. To add insult to injury, the lawsuit blames the Rockies’ substandard play for the atmosphere. It also argues that guests in luxury suites are especially vulnerable, distracted by the social scene and inadequately protected by stadium netting.
Notably, Aaron Judge wasn’t even playing in that 2023 series when this incident happened.
He was sidelined with a foot injury. But now, fully healthy and swinging like a wrecking ball, he’s set to make his Coors Field debut with 16 home runs and a .396 average. His recent surge has been especially eye-popping — over his last 30 games, Judge has hit well over .390 with double-digit homers, regularly punishing mistakes and turning routine fly balls into souvenirs.
Considering how Rockies pitching has performed, fans might want to seriously think about a helmet.
As Roeckel’s attorneys claim, baseballs at Coors “fly faster, higher, and harder.” Yankees fans might read that as a scouting report, but clearly it’s a warning to keep your head on a swivel at Coors Field this weekend.
