Aaron Judge's New Nickname Catches Attention Before Yankees-Mets

The New York Yankees and New York Mets will play a three-game Subway Series at Yankee Stadium starting on Friday, and a Big Apple legend was making the rounds beforehand on Tuesday.

As part of a free prostate cancer screening event at Citi Field, former Mets star third baseman David Wright spoke to reporters and was asked about the game's hottest hitter right now: Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge.

Specifically, Wright was asked for his thoughts on Judge's new "Captain America" nickname in relation to his role as captain of Team USA's 2026 World Baseball Classic roster, a title he is taking over from Mike Trout.

The now-42-year-old Wright, who earned the same nickname during his 14-year MLB career with the Mets, responded with a big smile on his face.

"He's hitting like .900 with 100 homers through April," Wright told reporters Tuesday. "I don't have any objection to that. I wish I could hit like that."

Wright also elaborated on the building momentum after the country's newest commit, Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes, was announced earlier in the day.

"Not only are you getting those elite hitters that I feel like Team USA -- it's been a little bit easier to get commitments from -- but now you're getting those dominant, top-of-the-line starters. I think it's good for baseball. I think it's good for Team USA. I think it's good for the World Baseball Classic."

The MLB's 2024 MVP may not quite be hitting .900 but he remains on a historic pace now in the season's second full month. Through 41 games, Judge leads the majors with an absurd .414 batting average, .500 on-base percentage, .783 slugging percentage and 1.283 OPS.

He also paces all players so far in home runs (14), RBIs (40), WAR (3.5) and intentional walks (6). He did the same last season with 58 homers and 144 RBIs.

Wright batted .296 for his career with a personal-best 33 home runs and 124 RBIs in 2008. The seven-time All-Star last played in the majors in 2018.
