Because trade deadline week wasn’t chaotic enough, Friday night gave us something truly on-brand for baseball Twitter: a full-blown flame war between a World Series champ, an ESPN insider, and Aaron Judge’s private swing coach.
And yes, this is somehow real life.
What started as Doug Mientkiewicz and ESPN’s Jeff Passan jawing about baseball knowledge somehow turned into Kevin Youkilis trading insults with Judge’s swing coach, Richard Schenck, aka the “Teacherman.”
Schenck lobbed the first grenade, popping into the comments of Youkilis’ plea to former players to just focus on helping raise up the younger players.
“How many big league MVPs have you trained since retiring?” Schenck replied.
Youkilis, never one to duck a heater, answered:
“I work with 12- and 10-year-olds... How many World Series champions have you trained?”
Ouch, Judge took a stray on that one.
That should’ve been that, but Schenck kept swinging—mocking Youkilis’ lack of high-level clients and questioning the intelligence of former players.
By the end, both men did what aging baseball Twitter combatants tend to do: claim “life is good” while still clearly scrolling for the next punch.
It was a bizarre and personal social media spat that is not uncommon with the Judge’s swing guru. He’s gotten into it with Chipper Jones and never shies away from controversial comments. He called the Yankees’ player development out, forcing his highest-profile client, Judge, to comment on the situation.
So, of course, instead of relaxing after a blizzard of trades and watching players settle in with their new teams, we got a high-and-tight exchange between a Red Sox legend and the biomechanics brain behind Aaron Judge’s swing.
Youkilis says he’s happy coaching Little Leaguers. Schenck says his methods are elite. Judge? He’s on the injured list, probably watching this unfold like the rest of us.
Baseball in 2025. Never dull. Not even on Twitter.
