It is safe to say that Alex Bregman's first year with the Chicago Cubs has been a major disappointment thus far. Through 81 games, he has posted a .242 batting average, .338 on-base percentage, .677 OPS, six home runs and 27 RBIs.
He signed a five-year, $140 million contract to take the Cubs to the next level and instead has been a liability. If Bregman lived up to expectations as a former All-Star, Silver Slugger and Gold Glove award winner, the Cubs may be looking a lot better.
They still sit seven games over .500 despite his struggles and even have a chance to gain ground in the National League Central, able to pick up a full game on the Milwaukee Brewers with a win Sunday.
Unfortunately, Cubs fans are beginning to lose their patience with Bregman. During Sunday's series finale against Milwaukee, he began the day going 0-for-3. However, his third at-bat is when Chicago fans really got upset.
Bregman hit a weak ground ball to the shortstop and was not running hard to first base. Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt bobbled the ball and would have likely had no chance to throw Bregman out had he been running full speed. Instead, Bregman was out by a step.
The timing made it even worse. Although the Cubs ultimately tied the game in the seventh, at the moment of the play they were down one run.

Had Bregman beaten it out, Chicago would have had runners on the corners with one out, meaning any sacrifice would have tied the game. Instead the Cubs had two outs and a runner at third, with one less opportunity to respond. Cubs fans voiced their frustrations on X.
"So frustrating as a Cubs fan. He's got a huge contract, isn't putting up very good numbers, and now this," a fan wrote.
Another said, "I’m tired of this bum."
"@Cubs BENCH Bregman. That 'effort' is unacceptable," wrote one more.
"Bregman makes way too many dollars to not be hustling," said a fan.
"I’m sorry, but Bregman needs to be benched. It’s time to send a message and give other people playing time," added another.
It makes sense that Cubs fans are reacting the way they are given Bregman's massive expectations. However, to see a veteran of his caliber, brought in at 32 years old to be a captain and leader of a young roster, fail to lead by example is disheartening to a fan base that invested so much belief in him this offseason.
