It was a solid season overall for the Boston Red Sox as they finished the 2025 MLB season with an 89-73 record, finishing third in the American League East standings.
Boston also clinched a postseason spot for the first time since 2021, ending their three-year postseason drought.
Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they were unable to advance out of the AL Wild Card round as they fell in three games to their AL East-rival New York Yankees.
Despite their early postseason exit, it was still a solid season overall for the Red Sox, especially after they made the shocking trade earlier in the season that sent star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.
Now the Red Sox will try to upgrade their roster this offseason as they try to build off their successful 2025 campaign, though they may lose one of their top players in free agency.
According to the New York Posts’ Jon Heyman, third baseman Alex Bregman plans to opt out of his contract with the Red Sox and become a free agent this offseason.

This is a massive report by Heyman and one that not only has an impact on Boston’s roster entering the offseason, but also one on Bregman’s future.
Of course, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox during Spring Training before the start of the 2025 season, ending his nine-year run with the Houston Astros that included two World Series championships.
Bregman’s contract with Boston included opt-out clauses after both the 2025 and 2026 seasons and with him opting out of his contract, he will now enter free agency for the second consecutive offseason.
Last season with the Red Sox, the 31-year-old third baseman posted a .273 batting average to go along with 18 home runs and 62 RBI over 114 games.
Now the veteran infielder will hit free agency for the second consecutive season where he could draw interest from many teams, though a return to Boston is not completely out of the question.
For Bregman, the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs could both show interest in him once again this offseason after they failed to sign him last offseason.
The Houston Astros could also be in the mix for a reunion with the star third baseman and the Kansas City Royals have also been mentioned as a potential under-the-radar landing spot in free agency.
No matter who signs Bregman this offseason, it appears as though his time with the Red Sox is nearing an end unless the two sides can work out a new deal, but if that is not the case, Boston may be on the lookout for a replacement this offseason.
Of course, the Red Sox could make former top prospect Marcelo Mayer their starting third baseman next season after his strong showing last season while filling in for Bregman while he was recovering from an injury or they could sign someone in free agency to fill their void at the position.
Either way, Boston may be in need of yet another starting third baseman entering next season with Bregman entering free agency and Devers in San Francisco after last season’s trade.
