Spring Training has begun, and many marquee free agents have yet to sign, including J.D Martinez, Patrick Corbin, Kyle Gibson, as well as notable Yankees Anthony Rizzo and Alex Verdugo.
A reunion between the Yankees and Rizzo seems unlikely, as the Yankees signed Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal, and Rizzo dealt with his fair share of injuries and regression during his Yankees tenure.
However, the Yankees have yet to re-sign Verdugo, who played a solid left field in 2024. Verdugo was in the 96th percentile in Arm Value and 94th percentile in Arm Strength per Baseball Savant, though he dealt with his fair share of offensive regression, particularly in power and hard-hit percentage.
With top prospect Jasson Dominguez working through defensive struggles in left field, many are starting to speculate the Yankees may reach out to Verdugo to hold it down in left field while Dominguez develops his defense.
That speculation was only fueled by an Instagram post from Verdugo, who posted a cryptic edit of some of his 2024 Yankees highlights.
The caption of the post, which has been gaining traction online, simply said: “In due time.”
This post has fueled rumors that the Yankees may push for a one-year deal for Verdugo, especially given what they gave up to acquire him.
In December 2023, the Yankees traded away No. 10 prospect Richard Fitts, reliever Richard Fitts and unranked prospect Nicholas Judice.
Fitts made headlines in Spring Training, hitting 99 mph with his fastball with a good feel for several pitches, while Weissert gave Boston 63 innings of solid relief work in 2024.
If the Yankees want a solid defensive fielder with decent offensive upside, then a reunion with Verdugo looks increasingly likely.
