It’s a historic moment for Jacob Wilson, as the 23-year old rookie shortstop has been named a starter for the All-Star Game, marking his first career All-Star selection and it’s a milestone filled with significance for both Wilson and the Oakland Athletics.

Multiple feats accomplished

Wilson becomes the first ever rookie shortstop to be fan elected as an All-Star Game starter. He’s the first Athletics shortstop to earn a starting nod since Bert Campaneris in 1974. Wilson is also the first A’s position player to start an All-Star Game since Josh Donaldson in 2014.

Wilson has certainly earned this first All-Star nod. Entering Friday, he’s ranked second in the Majors in hits (111) and batting average (.335), trailing only reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge in those categories, while his 34 multi hit games were tied with the Yankees’ slugger for most in MLB.

“That’s crazy,” Wilson said. “It’s such an honor just to represent this organization in doing that. But this isn’t a one person battle. I’ve had an incredible amount of help on the way that I’m super thankful for.”

“This definitely was not on my mind back in Spring Training or before the year started,” Wilson said. “This is something you kind of dream of. Definitely a special day. It’s exciting. We have great teammates and coaches here who have helped me along the way. I’m super grateful for them and super happy to be in this position.”

Jacob Wilson is quickly emerging as a young star in the making, not just for the Oakland Athletics but for all of Major League Baseball. At just 23 years old, Wilson has taken the league by storm with a rare combination of consistency, maturity, and elite level production. The future is very bright.
