A Filipino card game may have helped derail the Giants season

The Giants are looking for answer after a late-season swoon. One culprit is a Filipino card game.

San Francisco was leading the National League wild card race before the trade deadline, but have cratered since mid-July. They've been terrible on the road, going 6-28 in their final 34 games away from San Francisco.

While the team has suffered injuries and had to rely heavily on rookies, the Giants have also reportedly been hurt by an unprofessional clubhouse.

That's where pusoy dos comes in, also known as Filipino poker. Some of the Giants veteran players, namely outfielder Joc Pederson, reportedly "find (pusoy dos) more compelling than studying the night’s opposing starting pitcher."

Pusoy dos is a card-shedding game, where players compete to get rid of all their cards, in combinations or separately. It's very popular in the Philippines, and apparently also the San Francisco clubhouse.

Card playing isn't the only distraction. Some players don't like that the players have begun commemorating losses by playing Bob Marley in the clubhouse.

"When’s the last time you heard music in a major-league clubhouse after a loss?” said one Giants player. “I mean, you shouldn’t hang your head for too long after a loss. But you shouldn’t be OK with it, either.”

Since the trade deadline, the Giants are 17-31. That's a lot of "Buffalo Soldier" blasting in the clubhouse.

Pederson is a free agent this winter and likely won't return, either signing with another team or devoting himself full-time to pusoy dos. But the unfocused, lackadaisical clubhouse doesn't reflect well on the man in charge, manager Gabe Kapler.

With a mediocre roster and even worse discipline, Giants management might decide that, like a pusoy dos winner, Kapler is running out cards to play.
