Aaron Boone reacts to blowout loss to Orioles

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone says his team needs to "dig deep" after their 14-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

"Tonight's a frustrating night obviously," Boone said. "No one likes getting beat over the head, but it's also part of it."

Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino was absolutely shelled, allowing seven runs and 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work. Reliever Albert Abreu was even worse, allowing four hits and six earned runs in just 2/3 of an inning. In all, Baltimore had 14 runs on 20 hits.

"I'm not doing my job right now," Severino said after the game while noting he doesn't feel good about any of his pitches.

New York won the first two games of the four-game series against Baltimore but dropped the last two. The tailspin has the Yankees eight games back of the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East and four games back of the second-place Orioles.

Boone didn't have much to say about why Thursday evening wound up being an abysmal showing, but anyone who can read a box score will see how brutal of an L it was for the Bronx Bombers. They couldn't hit, and they sure couldn't pitch.

"Tonight's just a bad night for us," Boone said. "No fun to go through."

The Yankees now host the Chicago Cubs in a three-game set before the All-Star break. They have been scuffling of late, just 5-5 in their last 10 games. Outfielder Aaron Judge is still on the IL and the Yankees need his presence in the lineup badly. New York seems like a team that really could use a few days off to recover from physical and mental wounds. Even so, Boone's trying to have a positive mindset before his team takes on Chicago.

"These are the things that also harden you in the arena, too," Boone explained. "And we got a big series now heading into the break."
