The Chicago White Sox are only three days from their Opening Day tilt against the Detroit Tigers. The club made many decisions to whittle down their final roster over the last few days, but they still have work to do. However, the injury bug forced their hand on Monday when they placed catcher Max Stassi on the IL with hip inflammation.

The White Sox recalled Korey Lee from Triple-A Charlotte, who will make the Opening Day roster as a result.

Sooner Than Expected

Lee compiled a strong Cactus League performance, slugging his way to a 1.280 OPS in 26 plate appearances. His demotion to the minor leagues was unsurprising as the White Sox added Max Stassi in an offseason trade with the Atlanta Braves. Also in the fold is veteran Martin Maldonado, who signed a major-league deal with Chicago this winter.

Nevertheless, Stassi's injury puts Lee in Chicago much sooner than expected. The former first-round pick sat behind the veteran catching tandem on the depth chart but figured to be in the mix at some point in 2024.

What's On Tap Next?

Stassi can return on April 4, but his recovery will determine his availability. In the meantime, Maldonado will receive the bulk of the catching duties, with Lee filling in. Lee's stint could be as short as six games, but should Stassi remain on the shelf for an extended period of time, he will have the opportunity to improve on his dreadful 2023 performance.
