Before Sunday night, Otto Kemp had played only a handful of games in left field his entire life.
The former undrafted free agent made just seven starts in left while at Triple-A earlier this season - before that, he had never manned the position in affiliated ball. Yet according to one veteran reporter, Kemp's first big league start in the outfield could just be the beginning.
In the latest episode of The Phillies Show, former NBC Sports Philadelphia analyst Jim Salisbury said that he thinks Kemp's right-handed bat is just what the team has been missing.
"If he can just make the routine plays and not be a liability out there, I like the chances of that, being a positive right-handed hitting half of a platoon with Max Kepler," Salisbury said. "This lineup has been begging for that all year."

Kepler hasn't been having a good year overall, but his limited at-bats against lefties have gone even worse. Edmundo Sosa got all of one start in left field (with one incredible catch) and then never again. Weston Wilson, who previously hit lefties well, looked dismal at the plate before being demoted.
It leaves Kemp as the latest - and perhaps the last - option before Philly's front office has a decision to make at the trade deadline. He's looked solid at the plate so far, but whether or not he can adapt to a completely new position so quickly is another challenge.
On days that the Phillies start off against righties, expect Kemp to keep playing first base - at least until Bryce Harper is back in action. But against left-handed starters, which they are scheduled to face for the first two games in Houston, Kemp should be testing the waters in an effort to continue his unlikely journey.
