Angels 3B Anthony Rendon placed on injured list for third time this season

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon has been placed on the injured list for the third time this season.

The Angels announced Tuesday that Rendon had been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. The move is retroactive to July 5.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury while running the bases in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Rendon, who is in the second year of a seven-year, $245 million deal, has struggled with injuries and inconsistent production at the plate this season. He has played just 58 of the Angels' 85 games and is batting a career-low .240 with six home runs and 34 RBI.

The former Washington National missed 11 games in April with a groin strain and missed time in May with a bruise after fouling a ball off his left knee.

Angels manager Joe Maddon said after Sunday's win that Rendon is frustrated about his recurring injuries and the 2021 campaign altogether.

"He's very frustrated by the whole thing," Maddon said of Rendon's season, according to MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. "We spoke about it yesterday. And we both agree. We just want him to get him out there playing without anything bothering him. And we both know that when that occurs, good things are going to happen for us and for him. That's it. It's unfortunate. It's serendipitous. There's nothing you can do about it. But he's hurting right now and we've got to just wait until he's well."

Rendon will be eligible to return after the All-Star break next week.

The Angels are 43-42 entering Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. In addition to Rendon, superstar Mike Trout still is sidelined with a right calf strain and Justin Upton is recovering from a back injury.
