Mike Trout unsure if he'll play 2020 season with baby on the way
Could Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout sit out the 2020 season? David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

Angels All-Star Mike Trout still unsure if he'll play 2020 season with baby on the way

The Los Angeles Angels could potentially have to work through a major blow to their lineup if All-Star outfielder Mike Trout decides to opt-out of the 2020 campaign amid coronavirus concerns.

Trout, not only is worried about his safety, but the safety of his family. He and his wife, Jessica Cox, are expecting their first child to be born in August and any sort of contact with COVID-19 could be detrimental to his pregnant wife and unborn child.

“We’re playing it by ear,” Trout said, according to FOX News. “I think the biggest thing is this is our first child. I’ve got to be there. If I test positive, I can’t see the baby for 14 days. We would be upset. I’ve got to keep Jess safe. I’ve got to keep the baby safe. … I try to talk to my wife every night about this. I know I’m risking myself. I could meet somebody and get this virus. That’s the last thing I want to do.

“I love baseball. I love playing this game. We all want to play. It’s going to come down to how safe we are going to be. If there’s an outbreak or something happens these next few weeks, we’ve got to reconsider. I’ve got to do right by my family. A lot of guys have questions. It’s a tough, crazy situation in this country and in the world. Nobody has the answers.”

The 28-year-old also has been in contact with various players around the league, and all are thinking the same thing he is -- "Is this gonna work?"

Losing Trout, the best player in all of baseball, would be devastating to an Angels lineup that heavily relies on his bat. Last season, Trout averaged .291 at the plate with 45 home runs, 104 RBI's and a 1.083 OPS. He's a three-time MVP winner and eight-time All-Star.

The Angels went just 72-90 last season, even with Trout in the lineup. If he doesn't play, Los Angeles likely won't have a chance to skip past the Houston Astros or Oakland Athletics for the top spot in the AL West.

If Trout does skip the 2020 season, he'll be the biggest name in all of sports to do so. Some MLB players already have announced they'll be opting-out of the season. The list includes Washington Nationals star Ryan Zimmerman, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Leake and Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond.

The MLB season is set to get underway on either July 23 or 24, and players across all teams have already begun reporting to their home facilities in order to gear up for the season.
