Angels Fire 3 Coaches After Blowing Rangers Game

The Los Angeles Angels made sweeping changes to their coaching staff Tuesday, dismissing pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti following Monday night's extra-inning loss to the Texas Rangers.

The organization announced the moves after a 4-1 defeat in 10 innings extended the club's losing streak to three games. Tim Leveque will serve as interim pitching coach, while Michael Wuertz has been promoted to interim bullpen coach.

The Angels said the changes are part of an effort to evaluate the organization's pitching program during the remainder of the 2026 season. The announcement came through the club's official public relations account Tuesday.

Monday's loss highlighted many of the issues that have plagued the Angels throughout the season. Reid Detmers delivered six innings of one-run baseball, while Mike Trout gave Los Angeles an early lead with his 20th home run of the season before the bullpen unraveled in the 10th inning.

Luke Murphy allowed the Rangers to break the game open after issuing a leadoff walk and surrendering consecutive hits. The collapse capped another frustrating night for an Angels pitching staff that has struggled to protect late leads.

The coaching overhaul comes with the Angels sitting at 45-74 and in last place in the American League West. The club has produced a 4.53 team ERA while issuing an MLB-high 508 walks, numbers that contributed to the organization's decision to make changes.

The task facing Leveque and Wuertz will not be easy after the Angels moved several veteran bullpen pieces before the trade deadline, leaving a younger pitching staff to finish the season. Los Angeles continues its series against the Rangers looking to halt its three-game skid under a revamped coaching staff.
