Angels GM Perry Minasian on 2024 Season: 'We Want to Contend'
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels are looking to turn around their recent track record in 2024. It hasn't been an easy time to be an Angels fan over the last decade, with the team perennially losing. Even with two incredible players over this span in Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, the Angels have not made the playoffs since 2014.

Angels general manager Perry Minasian made it clear that he is not satisfied with these results, and wants to produce a winning team. With the Angels pitchers and catchers reporting on February 14 and spring training getting underway, now is the time for the Angels to get on the right track if they want to win this season.

“This is a place that, we want to win," Minasian said. "We want to contend. We want to be competitive. We want to play meaningful games in September.”

There are a lot of questions surrounding the Angels and if they can win. After all, if they couldn't win with Ohtani, how can they win without him? Still, Minasian has faith in the roster they've build over the offseason.

“We believe in this group," Minasian said. "We think it’s a talented group. There’s a lot of upside in this group… There’s some reason for optimism.”

Even with optimism, the Angels have a long way to go to become one of the top teams in MLB. In 2023, Los Angeles finished fourth in the AL West with a 73-89 record. Minasian has been the GM of the team since 2020, and they're still building to get the results they're seeking.

While it undoubtedly takes time to build a team and there is always a chance they'll contend, they have a lot to prove and show on the field before they're considered contenders.

At this point in the offseason, they're the consensus team to finish in fourth place in the AL West behind the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners.
