Angels' Mike Trout out six to eight weeks with calf strain

The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Cleveland Indians on Monday night but lost something more valuable than a game in the process.

Los Angeles confirmed ahead of Tuesday's matchup with Cleveland that three-time American League Most Valuable Player Mike Trout is on the injured list with a right calf strain that forced him out of Monday's contest after the first inning. The Angels added the 29-year-old superstar will miss between six to eight weeks of action.

It's a brutal blow for a club that sits at 18-22 overall and fourth in the AL West standings despite the many contributions of Trout and two-way star Shohei Ohtani over the opening month and a half of the campaign.

Trout heads to the IL batting .333 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs. According to ESPN stats, he leads all of MLB with a 1.090 OPS.

"I saw nothing. I looked up and he was limping to the third base bag," manager Joe Maddon said Monday night before knowing the extent of Trout's injury, per an ESPN story. "It was kind of innocuous, and I had no idea why. It was hurting him pretty good."
