Angels pitcher lands in free agency after making decision

The Los Angeles Angels are trying to take a sizable leap toward success under new manager Kurt Suzuki, but in order to meet that objective, their bullpen must perform significantly better than it did last season. Although the early results are promising, the organization does not want to get too complacent. It is still working to assemble the most reliable relief unit possible, and that includes parting ways with veteran Joey Lucchesi.

The 32-year-old left-hander was designated for assignment to make room for rookie righty George Klassen, and after clearing waivers and being sent to Triple-A Salt Lake, he is electing free agency, per the team’s public relations department. Lucchesi ends his brief tenure in Anaheim with a 7.71 ERA and 3.429 WHIP in 2 1/3 innings. He steadied the waters after allowing two runs and recording two walks against the Houston Astros on March 28, but control issues persisted.

Lucchesi will now try to extend his MLB career with another ballclub. The 2016 fourth-round draft pick was primarily a starting pitcher before transitioning to the pen in 2025. He tallied a 3.76 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 38 appearances for the San Francisco Giants and re-signed with the National League West squad on a minor-league deal during spring training. Lucchesi was unable to make the big-league roster and quickly joined the Angels.

Injuries will force teams to scour the open market for relief help, so the southpaw could receive another opportunity in the near future. The Halos were ready to move in another direction, however. They will trust pitching coach Mike Maddux to keep the bullpen in good standing and do his part to change the identity of this franchise.

Unfortunately, that means unpleasant decisions will have to be made along the way.
