Angels place Mike Trout on paternity leave

The Los Angeles Angels are going to be without Mike Trout for at least a little while.

Trout was placed on paternity leave on Thursday, as his wife Jessica is expected to give birth sometime in August, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

The limit for paternity leave is three days, and Trout will continue to be tested for COVID-19 while he's away from the team. As long as he continues to test negative for the virus, he'll be able to return to the Angels without interruption.

Trout was originally considering opting out of the 2020 campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic and the potential effects it could have on his wife and child. As baseball resumed at the end of July, Trout's concerns seemed to subside.

The three-time MVP is averaging .292 at the plate this season with four RBI, one home run and a .815 OPS. L.A. holds a 2-5 record, and they won't be getting any help with Trout gone for the next three days.

The Angels are set to face the Houston Astros, who are 3-3, this weekend in a two-game set.
