The Los Angeles Angels won eight straight games before falling 6-2 to the Miami Marlins on Saturday, their longest win streak since September 2014. On top of that, they did it without star outfielder Mike Trout (knee).

The three-time AL MVP is on the 10-day IL and hasn't played since April 30's 9-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners. He exited the contest early after experiencing knee soreness.

Trout has a long injury history, as he played just 36 games in 2021, 82 in 2023, and 29 in 2024. However, the 33-year-old is progressing in his rehab, via The Athletic's Sam Blum.

"Mike Trout will run the bases during the [New York] Yankees series," he reported. "That’s the last hurdle for him, but he might have to do it multiple days. It sounds as if his return (if all goes well) will be relatively soon, but not close to imminent."

The Angels will host the Marlins in their rubber match on Sunday before hosting a three-game set with the Yankees starting Monday.

Trout is slashing .179/.264/.462 with nine homers and 18 RBI through 29 games. Several Los Angeles players have stepped up in his absence, including left fielder Taylor Ward, catcher Logan O'Hoppe, first baseman Nolan Schanuel, and shortstop Zach Neto.

Ward has a team-high 15 homers and 37 RBI, while Schanuel leads with a .383 on-base percentage and 48 hits. The latter player is also tied with Neto atop the roster with a .286 batting average, and O'Hoppe leads with a .547 slugging percentage across 45 games. Left fielder Matthew Lugo is slugging .611, but he's only played 12 contests.
