Angels reportedly considering Mike Butcher for pitching coach role

The Los Angeles Angels are considering Mike Butcher for the club’s open pitching coach position, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times (link).

Butcher, who pitched four seasons with the Angels from 1992-95, has served as a major-league pitching coach for the past 14 seasons. Recently dismissed after a four-year run in Arizona, Butcher previously held stints with the Rays in 2006 and with the Angels from 2007-15 — so Butcher’s hire would represent something of a homecoming.

Of course, that stop in Tampa coincided with Joe Maddon’s time there, so it would be apropos for the Angels to welcome back two former franchise members with a working familiarity with one another. Maddon agreed to a three-year deal with the Angels earlier Wednesday.

L.A.’s previous pitching coach, Doug White, was fired after manager Brad Ausmus was shown the door in September. Maddon will also be in search of a new bench coach.
