Angels Win Arbitration Case Against Pitcher, Save About $400,000
USA TODAY Sports

It's only February, and the Angels already have a win under their belts.

In their first arbitration hearing of the Perry Minasian era, the Angels beat Jose Suarez, saving themselves about $400,000 in the process.

Suarez had filed for $1.35 million. The Angels countered at $925,000. Per the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, an independent arbitrator had to choose one side or the other; the arbitrator sided with the Angels.

Suarez, 26, went 1-3 with an 8.27 ERA last season in 11 games (seven starts). He missed most of the season with a left shoulder injury, and was more productive after returning from the 60-day injured list (4.82 ERA in five games) than before (9.62 ERA in six games).

Suarez was in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

The Angels had not gone to arbitration with a player since Jered Weaver in 2011. Weaver lost the hearing.

This year, the Angels might end up going to two arbitration hearings. Taylor Ward also failed to reach agreement with the Angels on a 2024 salary prior to the January deadline.

Like Suarez, Ward's 2023 season was compromised by a major injury, perhaps muddying his case to earn more money.

Suarez is expected to compete for a job in the starting rotation in spring training.
