St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras took social media by storm Saturday afternoon. Not for hitting a mammoth home run or making a defensive web-gem, but rather for chewing a piece of his own batting tape.
In the bottom of the third inning, with the game tied 1-1, Contreras stepped to the plate to face Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan. After working a full count, the 32-year-old proceeded to remove the batting tape off his bat in a rather unconventional manner.
The somwhat bizarre act was caught on camera and even analyzed by the FanDuel Sports Network broadcast team.

"Contreras is chewing on the tape," St. Louis Cardinals TV play-by-play announcer Chip Caray said during the game. "And he'll chew some more as he's down on strikes."
The broadcast proceeded with a replay and analyst Brad Thompson chimed in with his take.
"Why use a pocket when you can just eat it? Kind of like kids and glue,” Thompson said as Carey laughed.
Although Contreras proceeded to strike out swinging, the Cardinals won the game and the first baseman’s interesting approach took the internet by storm, making its prescense known across social media.
"A quick snack in the middle of the at-bat," Major League Baseball's social team posted to 'X.'
"Forget chewing gum. Chewing batting tape is the way to go," Fox Sports: MLB added.
"Willson Contreras out here snacking on bat tape like it’s a gourmet treat guess the dugout concession stand ran out of gum!," another user chimed in.
Contreras might need to second guess his ways after the third-year Cardinals star finished the day going 0-for-5 at the plate. The first baseman has yet to register a hit through a team-high nine at-bats through the first two games.
One of five remaining undefeated teams in MLB, the Cardinals wrap up their three-game set with the Twins Sunday at Busch Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:15 p.m ET.
