Arizona Diamondbacks lefty placed on 60-day IL
Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

After initially being placed on the 15-day IL, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Tuesday that Kyle Nelson will undergo surgery on his left shoulder due to thoracic outlet syndrome. Consequently, he has been transferred to the 60-day IL.

Currently, the D-backs have six pitchers on the IL.

Before his injury, Nelson, playing in his 3rd season with the Diamondbacks, made 11 appearances out of the bullpen, allowing five earned runs in 10.2 innings during this span.

The Diamondbacks also announced on Tuesday that Tommy Henry has been optioned to triple-A Reno. Through seven starts this year, Henry posted a 5.40 ERA. However, he did settle down over his last two starts, allowing just one run against the Cardinals in six innings on April 23rd, followed by a four-inning, two-earned run outing against the Dodgers on Monday.

To compensate for these moves, Arizona called up Brandon Hughes from Reno. Hughes went 0-3 with the Cubs last year, posting a 7.24 ERA.

So far in Reno this year, the 28-year-old has settled down nicely, allowing just three earned runs in 14.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Since April 17th, the D-backs have lost eight of their last 12 games, yet have recorded a positive +4 run differential, highlighting their early season inconsistencies.
