Arjun Nimmala could be the Toronto Blue Jays’ shortstop of the future.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
Entering the 2025 season, Nimmala ranked as our best prospect in the Blue Jays’ system, but he’s hit a speedbump in High-A since then. Still, his potential is high, and he ranks as our third-best prospect in the mid-season update. If you missed who ranked fourth overall, you can read about Gage Stanifer here.
Position: Shortstop
Bats: Right
Born: October 16th, 2005
Acquired: First round, 2023 MLB Draft
Previous ranking: First (2025 pre-season)
The Blue Jays selected the 6’1”, 170 lbs shortstop with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. Nimmala finished the 2023 season as a 17-year-old, slashing .200/.500/.320 with no home runs in 40 plate appearances with the Florida Complex League Blue Jays.
To begin the 2024 season, the Blue Jays were aggressive and started Nimmala in Single-A as an 18-year-old. Over his first 125 plate appearances, Nimmala slashed just .167/.280/.306 with three home runs. He was sent to the FCL and upon returning to the Dunedin Blue Jays, Nimmala slashed .265/.331/.564 with 13 home runs in 236 plate appearances. That said, he had a high 29.7 K% in this stretch and a 31.3 K% in Single-A.
Once again, the Blue Jays were aggressive with Nimmala to begin 2025, placing him in High-A with the Vancouver Canadians. The 2025 season was the inverse of the 2024 season, as Nimmala started incredibly strong before tailing off in the second half.
From the start of the season until June 1, Nimmala slashed .291/.382/.527 with nine home runs in 212 plate appearances for a 146 wRC+. Since then, Nimmala has slashed .182/.269/.289 with four home runs in 331 plate appearances. As a whole, Nimmala is slashing .224/.323/.381 with 13 home runs in 543 plate appearances for a 91 wRC+.
There are still positives to take away from this season, though. For starters, his K% dropped from 31.3% to just 21.4%, while maintaining a walk rate above 10%. Moreover, Nimmala doesn’t turn 20 years old until the middle of October. He was young for the level, and there are only five other teams in the Northwest League, so adjusting to Nimmala came fast.
Nimmala ranks as MLB Pipeline’s third-best Blue Jays prospect and their 42nd-best prospect in baseball. Power is the name of the game for the shortstop, as Pipeline grades the tool at 60. There could be swing and miss in the future on off-speed stuff, but the drop in K% is encouraging. The hit tool lags behind the power, but he has the potential to stick at shortstop thanks to a 60-grade arm and 50-grade fielding.
