Astros All-Star Makes Major Career Move After Jose Altuve News

It only took three months for Houston Astros teammates Jeremy Peña and Jose Altuve to regularly share an infield again.

Although Altuve opened the season as Houston’s starting left fielder, he’s spent most of June alternating between the outfield and his former home at second base. Peña, meanwhile, remains the Astros’ starting shortstop and is enjoying the best season of his four-year career.

Things could get much better for Peña fairly quickly. The Athletic reported that Peña, who is slated to hit free agency following the 2027 season, hired Scott Boras as his agent.

The 27-year-old Peña entered Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies batting .326 with 11 home runs, 40 RBIs, and a stellar .874 OPS. He’s added 16 doubles and 15 stolen bases for the AL West-leading Astros.

“He’s a very valuable player for us,” Altuve said in April, according to The Athletic, “and I’m very surprised he’s not signed into a long-term deal with the Astros.

“He’s a guy that you really want him on your team for the long term,” Altuve added. “So I think [general manager] Dana Brown and [owner Jim Crane] need to start working on that.”

Houston cannot afford to let Peña walk away, especially as their championship window continues closing. Alex Bregman joined the Boston Red Sox in free agency, and age is quickly getting the best of Altuve.

Ace Framber Valdez will hit free agency this fall, and there have been no reports about the two sides agreeing on an extension. Valdez is 8-4 with a 3.09 ERA and a 99-33 K-BB ratio in 96 innings.
