Astros Announce Injury Update on All-Star Yordan Alvarez on Thursday

The Houston Astros have been without one of their best players while having a seven-game lead at the top of the AL West.

At 52-34, the Astros have been one of the hottest teams in baseball in the past month, doing so without designated hitter Yordan Alvarez.

The 28-year-old, three-time All-Star has been out of the Astros' batting lineup since May 2 after sustaining a fractured right hand.

Although Alvarez still has no timetable for his return while undergoing rehab for the injury, Houston was able to provide an update on Thursday.

The injury report mentioned that the fracture that Alvarez has been recovering from is a "non-factor in the discomfort that Alvarez is currently experiencing."

"Alvarez began to ramp up his baseball activity last week and was able to take batting practice on the field on Saturday with positive results. However, on Tuesday morning, Alvarez reported to the Astros' medical staff that the pain in his hand had returned, which resulted in a visit to an additional hand specialist on Wednesday," Yordan Alvarez's update said.

With the information provided, it seems that Alvarez's fracture is making progress, but another layer to the injury has been discovered, resulting in him getting injections in the hand to help reduce the inflammation he's been experiencing.

Alvarez has been a huge missing piece to the Astros as they look to climb the AL playoff standings and possibly take the No. 1 seed from the Detroit Tigers.

Yordan Alvarez struggled at the plate in the 29 games he played for the Astros before getting sent to the injured list.

His inability to be a consistent hitter laregly had to do with the Astros not discovering the severity of his injury until after he sustained it.

Through 100 at-bats, Alvarez has a .210 BA, .306 OBP, .340 SLG, and a .646 OPS while hitting three home runs and 18 RBI.

It's unclear when he will return to the batting lineup, but it would be smart for Houston given the success they are already having, to be patient with the $115 million designated hitter.
