Left-handed slugger Yordan Alvarez is in his seventh season as a member of the Houston Astros.
The Cuban superstar made his MLB debut in 2019 and took off immediately, winning American League Rookie of the Year after smashing 27 home runs and driving in 78 runs in just 87 games.
Since then, Alvarez has established himself as one of baseball’s best hitters, securing three All-Star appearances and leading Houston to a World Series title in 2022 with two memorable home runs: a walk-off, three-run shot off Robbie Ray in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Seattle Mariners, and a three-run homer off Jose Alvarado in the bottom of the sixth inning in the decisive Game 6 of the World Series.
Over 658 games, the 28-year-old designated hitter has a .295 batting average, a .959 OPS, 167 home runs and 484 RBIs.
Alvarez is currently recovering from a fractured right hand. An initial muscle strain was later diagnosed as a break in the fourth metacarpal.
He’s been sidelined since early May, and a recent flare-up of inflammation and soreness forced the team to pause his rehab.
Ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, Alvarez said through an interpreter that he hit soft-toss drills today at about “60–65 percent” effort.
Yordan Alvarez hit soft toss today at “60-65 percent” effort, he said through an interpreter. Alvarez plans to hit again tomorrow. Of his setback in Florida, Alvarez said he woke up on the day he was supposed to face pitching and his hand was so swollen he could not grip a bat.

This season the Astros have been decimated by injuries: 16 players are on the injured list, including five from Houston’s Opening Day lineup. That number is the most in the league, but the nine position players sidelined stand out—only the Orioles even approach that mark, with six hitters on the IL.
The Astros are eager for Alvarez’s hand to heal so his bat can rejoin the lineup and bolster their offense in the second half. In 2024, he hit .308 with a .959 OPS, launched 35 home runs and drove in 86 runs.a
