The Houston Astros are on the verge of missing out on the postseason after a collapse in the month of September. The Astros have gone 12–12 in their last 24 games as the Seattle Mariners have surged and are entering Friday with a one-game deficit in the AL wild card race.
Houston has continued to feel the absence of Yordan Alvarez, who suffered a left ankle sprain on September 15. The 28-year-old left-handed slugger had appeared in just 19 total games after a four-month absence with a fractured right hand. Alvarez had been excellent over those 19 games, returning to his usual All-Star caliber form at the plate, posting a .369 batting average, .462 on-base percentage, 1.031 OPS, three home runs and nine RBIs.
Ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels, an unfortunate update surfaced on Alvarez’s status. He had been making progress and removed his walking boot just days after the injury.
However, despite his efforts, the Astros announced via manager Joe Espada that Alvarez’s return would not come during the regular season. “Yordan Alvarez will not play in the Astros’ final regular-season series against the Angels,” Joe Espada said. “Espada said Alvarez is ‘working tirelessly’ and getting better, but they just ran out of time to have him ready for this series,” wrote The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.

Alvarez had previously expressed how frustrated he was recovering from his fractured right hand this season, making it no surprise he is working hard to return to the field once again. Unfortunately for Alvarez, his return may not come at all if Houston does not take the final three games of the season.
With both the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians holding a one-game lead in the AL wild card race, the Astros will need to take care of business against the Angels and hope for some help.
