Astros Belt Four Homers to Defeat Angels 6-2 in Season Finale

Ramón Urías hit a two-run homer as part of a four-homer barrage, and the Houston Astros closed their season with a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Yainer Díaz, Brice Matthews, and Victor Caratini also went deep for Houston, which missed the postseason for the first time since 2016. The Astros broke open a 1-1 game in the fifth with a four-run outburst highlighted by solo homers from Díaz and Matthews and Urías’ two-run blast. Caratini added his solo shot in the sixth.

It was a bittersweet end for the Angels (72-90). They won nine more games than in 2024 but still endured their 10th straight losing season and extended their playoff drought to 11 years.

Mike Trout provided a bright spot, tying the game in the first inning with a 443-foot homer — his fifth in the final seven games of the year. Despite that late surge, the three-time MVP finished with a .232 average, 26 homers, and 64 RBI in 130 games, marking a career-low .798 OPS.

Houston starter Lance McCullers Jr., returning from the injured list, struck out four while giving up one run in three innings. Colton Gordon (5-5) followed with five no-hit frames to earn the win. Angels rookie Sam Aldegheri (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Key Moment:

In the ninth inning, the Angels trimmed the deficit to 6-2 and loaded the bases with one out. However, Houston reliever Jayden Murray struck out Denzer Guzmán and Taylor Ward to close the win.

Key Stat:

The Angels struck out 1,627 times this season, setting a new franchise record and finishing with the second-highest total in MLB history behind the 2023 Minnesota Twins (1,654).

Up Next:

Both teams head into the offseason looking to regroup — the Astros after missing the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, and the Angels after another year outside the postseason picture.
