Astros Designate Player for Assignment After Waiver Claim

The Houston Astros made a 40-man roster move Monday, claiming outfielder Nelson Velázquez off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals and designating infielder Shay Whitcomb for assignment.

Velázquez joins the American League West leaders after appearing in the majors with St. Louis this season. His arrival required an immediate opening on Houston's 40-man roster, leading to Whitcomb's designation.

The Astros continue to add depth as they push to maintain their lead in the division, while Whitcomb now enters the DFA process, where Houston must trade him, release him or outright him to the minor leagues if he clears waivers.

Astros beat writer Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported the transaction on X, noting that Houston claimed Velázquez from the Cardinals before designating Whitcomb for assignment to create space on the 40-man roster.

Velázquez, 27, brings four seasons of major league experience and has shown particular success against left-handed pitching during his career. He hit .216 with four home runs and four doubles for the Cardinals this season before being placed on waivers.

Houston will likely evaluate whether the right-handed hitter can provide additional outfield depth and offensive production against left-handed starters during the stretch run.

Whitcomb, meanwhile, loses his spot on the 40-man roster after spending time with the Astros earlier this season. The versatile infielder has provided depth across multiple infield positions during his time in the organization.

With Houston sitting atop the American League West, Monday's move reflects another effort to strengthen the roster ahead of the final weeks of the regular season while creating an opportunity for Velázquez in a new organization.
