Astros get 2 big injury updates ahead of playoffs

The Houston Astros are looking to win the American League West and clinch a postseason spot. It seems as if star infielder Carlos Correa could return from injury at some point in September. The Astros recently received Mike Burrows and Brice Matthews injury updates as well.

MLB.com reports that Burrows suffered an injury setback during his most recent rehab start. The right-handed pitcher is dealing with right elbow neuritis and right shoulder inflammation. He does not have an expected return date at the moment, but Burrows still wants to pitch again in 2026.

As for Matthews, a versatile outfielder and infielder, he is dealing with a left knee sprain and is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon.

Burrows, 26, struggled across his first 18 outings (17 starts) this season, pitching to a 5.99 ERA during that span. However, the right-handed hurler turned in a 3.94 ERA in 23 outings (19 starts) last year with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is an impactful pitcher and the Astros would love to have him available for the postseason.

Matthews, 24, has hit just .197/.250/.332 across 82 games played during the 2026 campaign. He does have seven home runs and four stolen bases. Matthews can impact the game in multiple ways, and his defensive versatility would give the Astros a boost.

Updates on Burrows and Matthews’ injury statuses will be monitored and provided as they are made available.

Houston currently holds a 71-69 record. The ball club holds a two-game lead in the American League West standings over the second place Texas Rangers.

The Astros’ next game is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 2:10 PM ET against the Chicago White Sox.
