Astros Get Excellent Pitching Update Ahead of Trade Deadline
Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

As the Houston Astros inch closer to an eighth division title in nine years, they’re already starting to prepare for reinforcements.

The Astros announced that third-year starting pitcher J.P. France began a rehab assignment in the Florida Coast League on Monday night. France struck out two and allowed three baserunners in 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

France, who turned 30 in April, has missed the entire season after undergoing right shoulder surgery last July. The Astros have not announced a potential timetable for France’s return, though it’s worth noting that he must be on the active roster or the 60-day IL by September 1. France is currently on the 60-day IL, so he’s covered there.

France went 0-3 with a 7.46 ERA in five starts last season. He allowed five homers and walked 12 in 25 1/3 innings before hitting the IL.

However, France burst onto the scene with 11 wins and a 3.83 ERA in 2023. We’ll see if the Astros use him as a starter upon his return, or if they’ll have him pitch out of the bullpen before a potential return to the rotation next year.

Houston owns a 3.62 team ERA, tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for fourth-best leaguewide.

The 58-42 Astros hold a five-game lead over the Seattle Mariners as of publication.
