The Houston Astros finished off the 2025 regular season on a disappointing note, missing out on the MLB playoffs for the first time since 2016. Houston held a position in the postseason until the end of September.
The Astros finished with an 87–75 record, yet the team’s quality of play diminished after the All-Star break as they finished out the year with a 31–35 record. After a disappointing season, many questioned the future of the club’s manager Joe Espada, along with the team’s GM Dana Brown. Espada led the Astros to the playoffs in 2024 but was quickly swept at home in the AL wild card series by the Detroit Tigers.
Espada has been with the Astros for the past seven seasons, operating as the bench coach from 2018–2023 (replacing Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora) before taking over as manager ahead of the 2024 season.
With Espada and Brown both remaining under contract through 2026, the Astros seemingly made a decision on their futures on Tuesday. “Source: Astros GM Dana Brown and manager Joe Espada are both under contract for next year and will return in 2026, a source tells MLB.com. Any speculation about their futures can be put to rest,” wrote MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.

While the decision may raise eyebrows, the Astros endured significant setbacks throughout the regular season. Yordan Alvarez, Isaac Paredes and Josh Hader—all of whom have been All-Stars—missed extended time due to injuries. Alvarez was sidelined for 114 games with a fractured right hand and later a fractured ankle. Paredes dealt with a torn right hamstring, and Hader was unavailable throughout September with a left shoulder capsule sprain.
Aside from that, Espada’s rotation was decimated by injuries, forcing the team to rely heavily on depth pieces and spot starters. Houston also entered the season without Kyle Tucker, who was traded to the Chicago Cubs, and Alex Bregman, who signed with the Red Sox and reunited with Alex Cora. Espada is expected to get another shot in 2026, and with a healthier roster, he’ll aim to lead a quick turnaround back to postseason contention.
