Astros Make Roster Move After Win Against White Sox

The Houston Astros are expected to recall left-handed reliever Bryan King from Triple-A Sugar Land after Friday night's 9-5 comeback win over the Chicago White Sox. The move comes less than a week after King was optioned, with Houston set to create a roster opening by placing starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti on the injured list.

King's return cannot happen under normal option rules because he has not spent the required 10 days in the minors. However, an injured list placement exempts the Astros from that restriction, allowing the reliever to rejoin the bullpen immediately.

Arrighetti's injury prompted the roster decision after he exited during his second-inning warmup pitches against Chicago. The Astros later announced the right-hander is dealing with acute nerve irritation in his right foot after experiencing sharp pain between his toes on nearly every delivery.

King heads back to Houston after posting a 3.40 ERA with 35 strikeouts and six saves across 42 appearances this season. Although he was dominant for much of late May through early July, surrendering five home runs over his last four outings led to his July 20 demotion.

Arrighetti entered Friday with a 7-5 record and a 4.34 ERA. His absence would place additional pressure on Houston's rotation, which only recently welcomed Ronel Blanco back from a lengthy injury layoff.

Houston's bullpen receives an experienced arm in return as the club looks to build on its four-game winning streak. King's familiarity with high-leverage situations gives manager Joe Espada another reliable left-handed option during an important stretch of the season.

The Astros improved to 51-54 with Friday's victory but remain in the American League West race. King's expected activation represents another effort to stabilize the pitching staff while the club waits for more clarity on Arrighetti's recovery.
